Cape Wrath – update 1

31st December 2014 by Gilad Nachmani

It has been more than a month since I started my Cape Wrath training, and I must admit, it isn’t going that well. A mix of cold weather (and the need to adjust to it), an ill child (thanks to day care!) and time constraints meant that it was a little hard to follow the training plan regularly. My planned long hiking days haven’t happened, but I did do some things:

1. A navigation weekend in the Peak District. It was planned to be 3 days but ended up being 2.

2. A family day hike in Epping forest, but not Surrey hills as planned.

3. Regular runs (but not long enough).

4. Cycling often – this is just a bonus

I’m hoping to be able to do the next couple of hikes, using the the South Downs and the North Downs to work on distance.

Another part of getting ready to the trip was to start planning the route and checking the conditions. I bought the maps from Harvey as they have a 2 map set that covers the whole trail in a “tough” paper. The maps show the various options on the trail, as some of it is not marked. I also found a good source of trip reports on the Walking Highlands site. I’m planning on marking the relevant points on the maps.
